Castor is proud to present a major survey of Clyde Hopkins’  (1946 - 2018) works from the late 80’s to early 90’s. ‘Paintings 1989 - 1993’ brings together a selection of large scale works on canvas and paper from a pivotal period in the British abstractionist’s career.

Born in Bexhill on Sea, Sussex in 1946, Hopkins studied Fine Art BA at the University of Reading in 1965 and went on to exhibit widely both in the UK and internationally for over 40 years.

Hopkins has been the subject to numerous solo exhibitions including the Serpentine Gallery, London (1978 and 1986), Ikon, Birmingham and Rochdale Art Gallery (both 1985), Salisbury Art Centre (1988) amongst others. In 2020 Hopkins paintings Kent to Yorkshire (via the DT), 1983-4, was acquired by Tate. In 2022 The Dock Museum in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria hosted a ‘Panhandle Painting: A Retrospective’.

Hopkins’ influence on future generations of artists can not be underestimated. Alongside his highly respected painting practice, he also taught as Head of Painting at Winchester School of Art 1982 - 1990 and Chelsea College of Art from 1990 until retiring in 2006 when he was made an Emeritus Professor.

For 30 year Hopkins worked from studios in South London, firstly in Greenwich where he made the works on show here, before moving to Art in Perpetuity Trust Studios (APT), Deptford which he a co-founded in 1995.
